BACKGROUND CHECKSAll adults working with youth  and other at-risk participants should be submitted to an annual  background check to ensure the safety of all participants.  Below are the background check recommendations provided by our insurance underwriter:

  • A national background check should be conducted because state systems to not share information.
  • Require background checks for ALL staff and volunteers that interact with clients, particularly youth and at-risk participants.  If a volunteer is only doing behind the scenes work (office, scheduling, etc.) then a background check is not required, but still recommended.

To assist chapters that do not currently have a background screening process in place, DSUSA has established a “parent” account with the National Center for Safety Initiatives (NCSI).  Any chapter can establish a “child” account under Disabled Sports USA which waives the $75 start-up fee.  After establishing an account, chapters are able to conduct Full Service Screens for $20.

Full Service Screen Includes:

  • Two national criminal database searches covering 50 states, DC, Guam and Puerto Rico
  • Two Sex Offender Registry database searches for 49 states, DC, Guam and Puerto Rico
  • Social Security Number verification
  • Address history records
  • Office of Foreign Assets Control federal terrorist database searches
  • County Courthouse search
  • Automatic re-check of single national database and sex offender registry twelve months after first screen
