June 23, 2009

June 23, 2009—Rockville, MD— Disabled Sports USA (DSUSA), one of nation’s largest athletic organization for people with a physical disability, today announced the schedule for the nationwide 2009 Summer Fest Tour series.  Summer Fest is going on now through September, consisting of 21 programs hosted by 18 DSUSA chapters in 15 states. These regional events provide instruction in a broad range of summer sports including kayaking, athletics, swimming, water skiing, sailing, shooting, canoeing, cycling, golf, equestrian, rock climbing, SCUBA, fishing and many more.

Summer Fest is the only series of its kind that provides youth and adults with disabilities across the country with state-of-the-art instruction, adaptive equipment and opportunities to compete in a variety of athletic events. In addition to providing grants to local chapter programs for the purchase of adaptive sports equipment and make local programs more accessible to community programs on an ongoing basis, Disabled Sports USA also works with national governing bodies and other professional sport organizations to conduct training for recreation instructors that want to provide quality events for clients with disabilities. These organizations include: U.S. Handcycling; US Association of Blind Athletes ; No Limits (Rock Climbing); PADI/SDI/Handicapped SCUBA Association; USA Water Ski; Professional Golfers Association of America; US Sailing; USA Canoe & Kayak; and more.

“The 2009 programs will include challenging outdoor sports that show people with disabilities that they can lead full and active lives with their physical challenges,” said Kirk Bauer, JD, executive director of Disabled Sports USA and a disabled Vietnam veteran. “These programs are conducted all throughout the U.S. to provide access to a wide range program for disabled athletes of all skill levels.”

Part of the Summer Fest Tour series includes national and regional competitive events and training seminars: National Junior Disability Championships (Mo.), Endeavor Games (Okla.), USABA Cycling Development Camp (Colo.), Great Lakes Regional Games (Ill.), No Barriers Festival USA (Fla.) and “Adapt to Achieve” Chapter Development Conference (N.H.).
