The Awesome Warfighter Ski Skill Development Camp will introduce amputee, SCI and visually impaired veterans to snow skiing February 21-22 through the use of adaptive ski equipment and techniques. In addition, family members will gain skills to comfortably ski and get on/off lifts with the camp participants, to increase the likelihood that participants will continue to ski or develop ski skills after the camp ends. This program was a tremendous success last year (volunteers and participants alike all had a terrific time) and we want to continue the momentum started by getting more disabled veterans out on ‘the best snow in Idaho’. Both Awesome volunteers and Recreation Unlimited volunteers will provide skilled instruction in adaptive ski techniques, utilizing three track, four track and sit skis where needed. A series of three lessons will be offered over the course of two days with an optional afternoon of recreational races or other team building activity available on the afternoon of the second day. This program will allow 8 veterans and 1 family member/veteran to either be introduced to skiing or further develop their beginning skills through this program. Program funds requested through this grant will cover transportation. lodging, ski lessons, equipment, ski passes, meals and program coordination. By the end of the program, participants will be able to successfully ski with limited assistance down beginner terrain and safely ride the ski lift with adaptive ski equipment. Returning beginner skiers will demonstrate an improvement in their ski technique and ability to tackle slightly more advanced terrain. Veterans will be confident and knowledgable about their ski abilities and be poised to continue enjoying this lifetime sport.
