The Higher Ground Military Middle Fork Paddling Adventure is a unique experience that takes place on Idaho’s famed Middle Fork of the Salmon River. This weeklong program will serve approximately nine female veterans and their supporters, for a total of 18 participants. The staff of certified recreation therapists and avid outdoor professionals strategically incorporates the outdoor adventure activities in order to help each participant achieve a higher level of independence, self-confidence, and coping strategies. A vital component of these programs is the intimate atmosphere where veterans feel comfortable to share their struggles, and supporters can open up about their newfound roles as caregivers. Days will be spent on the river together, experiencing the excitement of class 1-4 rapids on this world renowned stretch of the Salmon River. From kayaks to paddle boats to stand-up paddleboards, the instructors will help every participant overcome fears and accomplish feats while enjoying the remote, tranquil beauty of Idaho’s Frank Church Wilderness. We will then apply the majestic beauty and recreational obstacles to the hurdles of everyday life, showing the veterans and their supporters that through recreation and this river adventure, other life hurdles might seem more manageable. Physical, social, and emotional gains will be witnessed, and staff will help every participant translate this progress into other aspects of their lives for a more successful transition into civilian life post-injury. The thrills of the Middle Fork Paddling Adventure do not stop after the weeklong program; HG staff follows up with every veteran for a minimum of three years to help them reintegrate more successfully into their home communities.
