A dozen local youth with a variety of special needs and disabilities are specially invited to spend a weekend in barracks style canvas tents, sleep on cots and don military style uniforms, taking orders from veterans at the campsite named ‘Yellow Ribbon’ pavilion. Regional Wounded Warriors are paired up one-on-one with STRIDE Adaptive Sports youth athletes for a Military –style Boot camp retreat at the STRIDE Center for Outdoor Recreation and Education . Warriors will break camp on Wednesday afternoon for training and get to know each other. Wednesday evening the group will attend the Armed Forces Day at the Altamont Fair; and on Thursday evening dine in a Chatham restaurant. STRIDE youth with special needs arrive Friday . This unique experience will not only be a fun-filled camping retreat, but will have a dual purpose for therapeutic healing for those who have combat injuries and/or disabilities to mentor some of STRIDE’s youth . Each veteran, will mentor a STRIDE youth athlete with a similar disability for a weekend of learning together. The educational theme for the two days together in the woods will be military etiquette, culture and civic duty. Activities will include flag-raising and lowering and flag folding; salute and command etiquette; sampling MRE’s; hiking, swimming, fishing, paintball target shooting and archery. On Saturday, the entire group will head to Jiminy Peak Aerial Adventure Park to foster leadership and team work.
